We left Salvation Mountain in California and decided to punch it through the night back to Phoenix to catch our flights home in the morning. We had seen the mysterious outlines of the Saguaro as we left Phoenix upon our arrival four days earlier, but it was nighttime and we could only mark the shadows of these desert sentinels as we sped by in the minivan. We were determined to see them in the sunshine before we left.
The drive from California took about 4 hours and we parked up at a motel for the night. The next morning, we woke early and drove out to a local park with notorious amounts of the giant (some are 6o feet tall!), iconic cacti. We weren't disappointed. After squeals of delight from my travelling companions about finding a "THREE BANGER!" (translation: a cactus with the typical, cartoony 3 prongs), we hiked about, got our feet nice and dusty for the plane rides home and marvelled at these beautiful plants. As we left, a Cactus Wren perched atop a nearby Saguaro and twittered a little tune to us. Goodbye to you, too!
What a lovely way to end 2016, a year I think most of us agree was a bit...all over the place. I wish you all the very best for 2017, and may the adventures continue to be inhaled in great gulps!
